Lucky But Unlucky -

Just came across this letter written by Paddy Brennan. D.C.M 14TH Btn - and thought it worth sharing

Dear Father,
We have only just come in from the front line and it is wonderful to be able to rest away from the range of the German bombardment.

We were pinned in our trench for three weeks by German snipers and it was a terrible experience. The dead were being pressed into the bottom of the trench as we walked on them. There was nothing else to do but to walk them into the mud. The stench was horrible and we were virtually starving.

Eventually we were lucky but unlucky in getting a feed of horse meat. One was killed nearby and was cut up and boiled by the cooks. They came along at night and threw great chunks of it into the trenches for us to eat. That was the lucky part. The unlucky part was that we got a hoof which actually still had the horseshoe on it.

I can only hope for the best and pray that this war will end soon.
Love to all
Paddy
