Re: LIGHT HORSE CENTENARY

Geoff, in regard to your 'Simpson' the re-enactor's name is Bob Pankhurst from Somersby, an interesting chap whose heart is in the right place but comes acroos indifferently. Bob Pankhurst is one of the disciples of the past pres of the ALHA who repeats the 'fairy' about all the horse being shot after the War and I heard him say that the Light Horse went on patrols of one hundred miles in a day witrh only one canteen of water for man and horse!
He was pictured in 'The Daily Telegraph' a day or two before the Reserve Forces' March in Sydney. His depiction of Simpson's Field Ambulance uniform left a lot ot be desired.
Up here in Maitland, in the Hunter Valley, the Maitland RSL for many years allowed two women dressed as Simpson and a wounded Digger on a donkey to participate in the Maitland Anzac Day Parade. The lady who 'played' Simpson was accordingly awarded an OAM.
Best regards to one and all and
Glory to Australia

Did anyone think to ask the donkey's opinion on the matter?

Yes, Rob.
I was over at Green Hills last Wednesday lunch time to buy a copy of the Maitland Mercury. I was on the front page with a story about the Maitland men who I believe may be buried in the 'mass grave at Fromelles' and Miriam was on page 9.
I shall post a new listing on the Hunter Valley men of Fromelles in the next day or so. Should make interesting reading for some.

Dave,

I noted in a previous post that your letter on the 'Mass Graves at Fromelles'got printed in the People's Paper (The Daily Telegragh) a week or so ago.

May I ask the source you used to quote the number of Australian 'missing' in the letter?

Regards
Geoff S

Re: LIGHT HORSE CENTENARY

Geoff: Did the published letter tresemble the following in part: "The VC Corner Australian Cemetery Memorial at Fromelles is one of eight memorials which list Australia's 22,000 First World War missing. The other seven are the Menin Gate Memorial at Iepers, in Belgium; the Chatby Memorial at Alexandria in Egypt; the Hollybrook Memorial at Southampton in England; the Australian National Memorial, at Villers-Bretonneux in France; the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli; the Basra Memorial in Iraq and the Jerusalem Memorial in Israel."
The figure of 22,000 has been bandied around for the past who knows how many years. In this game one reads a lot of books and figures, and certain figures stay in your mind. If the number I quoted is wrong, then it is my mistake!

Dave,

I cannot confirm if your number is incorrect or correct.
I am not trying to catch anyone out here.

I just found it interesting, because when I went to check some of my books- I got different numbers for those posted as 'missing'.
It seems to be a common occurance for me of late!
