ANZAC or Anzac

I know this is a matter of debate in Australia, particularly with some Forum members. My personal belief is that Anzac should be used unless talking about the Army unit itself when ANZAC is correct.

However my belief is not shared in New Zealand. I recently asked a mate over there and he said...........

It was discussed and voted on at the RNZRSA 2004, National Conference.

I can't remember who mooted the idea, but I have a feeling it was the (then) National President David Cox, as his farewell tribute, or the incoming guy John Campbell, but they did pass it at the 2004 RNZRSA National Conference. The word forthwith in NZ will always be spelt in caps as "ANZAC." If you go to the RNZRSA site, it looks like every time Anzac is mentioned it is in caps.

Well you know my thoughts on the subject Ted; basically it shows an ignorance of historical usage and basic English grammar to always capitalise 'Anzac'.

The AWM does the same thing, but that just proves they make mistakes too!

Got to agree with you here Bryn

We who are left, how shall we look again
Happily on the sun or feel the rain
Without remembering how they who went
Ungrudgingly and spent
Their lives for us loved, too, the sun and rain?

Re: ANZAC or Anzac

Hi,
I'm a newbie to this forum (today) and I'm from Oz. While I note Bryn's comments re English grammer my thoughts are;
1. that ANZAC is actually an acronym for what we all are aware of. It was capitalised at the time it was created and used during the war (eg I ANZAC Corps, II ANZAC Corps) and thus to captilaise it is to use it in it's correct form; and
2. New Zealand put the NZ into ANZAC and as a courtesy to the Kiwi's we should not lower case what is in fact an abrieviation of their Nation's name.

Regards
Chris

So how about ANZac?

SCUBA, LASER and RADAR are also words that started out as acronyms and are now written scuba, laser and radar. The fact that a word may start as an acronym is not a reason that it must always remain one.

That's what it says - congratulaions; it appears you can read.

The formation names were NOT "I ANZAC Corps, or II ANZAC Corps" - They were 1 Anzac Corps and II Anzac Corps, as reading any history written around the time will show.
