I'm a 15th battalion [sign in to see URL] you tried the australian war memorial website? the battalion history unfortunately is very hard to come by, and i myself only have a photocopy of it. my grandfather was a member of the battalion for all of 1918, although i have followed in their footsteps through gallipoli to the hindenburg line about 20 times in france, twice to the peninsula.

can i get you anymore help?

Re: 15th Battalion -

I am researching the history of my great uncle,Private FRANK WILLIAM WOOTTON, 1369. 15th Bn. Australian Infantry [sign in to see URL].
According to [sign in to see URL] he was wounded at sea ond died on 8th May 1915.
Can anybody shed any light on what might occurred on that or what they mean by 'wounded at sea'. I'm aware that there was a lot of confusion at the time. I was wondering if anybody out there has any information.

Re: 15th Battalion -

Mate,

I may have mentioned this before be I have a lot of info on some 28 members of this Bn in the Camel Corps.

This included men as William Cole an original member who went to the Camel Corps but returned to his Bn in late 1916 and was in late 1918 charged with SIW (self inflicted wound) and GCM and sentenced to 10 years Penal service for desertion who was RTA in late 1919 with all medals forfited.

There is also other men I am looking at now (Edward Matthew Waters) who was WIA at the fighting at Stormy Trench in Feb 1917 and Captured by the Germans only to died from his wounds and frost bite after have his leg amputated.

I have checked in my copy of the "History of the 15th Battalion" and his details that you state seem correct.
Under the Aus War Memeorial website - Biographical Database - Red Cross Wounded and Missing it states he died at sea on a hospital ship. See attached below.
Trust this helps.

Paul Gillies

Many thanks for pointing me to the Australian War Memorial site. I was not aware of it's existence. It has given me some interesting information.
Once again thanks.

Wootton F.W. [sign in to see URL] sea-8/5/1915.
One can surmise that your forebear was wounded ( going on my grandfather's experience--) at least 5 days previously!
I have an edition of the " History of the 15th Battalion" [sign in to see URL].
Paid 50 cents before it went to the burner!!1986!!" withdrawn from State Library of Tasmania!!
The history is somewhat, like a myopic recantation of what happened,a lot of people get mentioned -but at Gallipoli ??-----I have no idea what they were trying to achieve !!-the defence on Quinn's Post -is a struggle-------I know the Turks were close by- but have no idea where, what, they were??-sorry to be negative -BUT!!I can not find any mention of your relation in the history ----your sincerely ---------HobieT
