I was recently trying to re-make contact with Richard Carey who has posted on this forum. Unfortunately I was made aware that Richard has passed away. He was a very kind and generous man. We only met several times in person, but we had some great discussions about our respective relatives in the 15th Batt. He had a wonderful picture of F Coy/15th Batt. that his grandfather and my Great Uncle served in. At the time I did not have facilities to scan it. I am wondering if someone one here such as Paul Gillies who also met Richard, did get a scan. Please PM if so. regards, Steven Jeppesennondisclosed_email@example.com (Steve283)Wed, 07 Nov 2012 01:54:22 +0000 Re: 15th Battalion -https://banzacresearch.runboard.com/p3776,from=rss#post3776https://banzacresearch.runboard.com/p3776,from=rss#post3776Hi Neil, Sorry for the late reply, I only visit this site occasionally. Coy 15th Battalion, I discovered a great library resource which I thought I would share. You may already know of it, but if not here it is: The Qld State Library, and I'm sure most other state libraries, keep microfilm copies of all Australian newspapers and journals dating back to the late 1800's. The "Sydney Mail" weekly newspaper printed pictures of men wounded or killed in action along with stories from some. My great uncle was pictured in the 16th June 1915 edition. Further, a newspaper publication called the "Queenslander" printed pictures of most Qld AIF servicemen of WW1. I tracked down the F.Coy 15th Bat. in the 26th Dec 1914 edition. Have a look at the prints I was able to make on the following web site. http://picasaweb.google.com.au/Steve28362/15thBattalion?authkey=IKJGqS2FGvc I'm happy to help anyone wishing to do similar research in this area. I just wish I had more time to go through all the editions. regards, Steven Jeppesennondisclosed_email@example.com (Steve283)Thu, 13 Dec 2007 20:57:48 +0000 Re: 15th Battalion -https://banzacresearch.runboard.com/p3743,from=rss#post3743https://banzacresearch.runboard.com/p3743,from=rss#post3743I'm looking for a good clear map to show the route the 4th Brigade took on August 6/7th 1915. He was No 6, William Pigott DARBY, who was a stretcher-bearer, & served at Gallipoli, and in the 1st occupation of the front line trenches at Pozieres, until wounded by Shell-schock, 12 August 1916. His Irish relations have recently commissioned a replica of the Cenotaph statue; it was caste, from photographic images, by an Irish artist, John COLL, & unveiled in Dublin last month. Those relations are very keen to get hold of a copy of CHATAWAY's "History of the 15th Battalion, A.I.F., War of 1914-18." I know copies of this book are very hard to come by, & they may have to make do with a digital copy. But they are definitely in the market to purchase a copy, by whatever means. Any information as to any copy welcomed by me at cgpigott@bigpond.com for forwarding to Dublin. Re your Q's My great uncle was a Qld'er from the township of Bauple, just south of Maryborough. Richard also kindly lent me the group photo which I colour copied. Turned out ok... a scan probably would have been better. I tried to identify my great uncle and think I have narrowed it down to about 2 or 3 men using a portrait photo I have. I was wondering if there might be another copy of the same photo 'out there' somewhere, but with names. My Grandfather Cpl Jeremiah Scully (1802) was in the 15th Battalion too. He served at Gallipoli and was captured at Bullecourt. One memory of his time as a POW in Germany(Limburg, Friedrichsfeld and Parchim) was the women and children begging for food outside the wire and the Australian POWs throwing the contents of Red Cross parcels over to them. He decided to stay in London (Earls Court) after his release and had a real job on his hands to get discharged in the UK in September 1919. If any member is visiting the Australian POW memorial in Brisbane I would dearly love a photo of his name on the memorial to add to my archive. I'm planning to be at Bullecourt on 11 April 2007, the 90th anniversary, and hope to share a drink with any other 15th Battalion fanatics in the 'Canberra' bar. Hope that others will be there to make it a special day. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Mark1916)Wed, 07 Jun 2006 08:49:27 +0000 Re: 15th Battalion -https://banzacresearch.runboard.com/p1906,from=rss#post1906https://banzacresearch.runboard.com/p1906,from=rss#post1906My g.grandfather, Cpl Colin McAlister (#5151)transfered to the 15th in May 1917 to join his brother LCpl Daniel McAlister (#4851). Re the 15th Bn Assoc, it was nearly 3 years ago when I first made enquiries. I went first to the Qld RSL, who referred me to a p. o'keefe, e-mail p.okeefe@afgrp.com.au . I'm not sure now what his position was, or even if there still is an association - if there is it would most likely be for the 2/15th. I would suggest repeating the process, that is e-mailing the Qld RSL HQ and asking if they have a contact for a 15th assoc. What about the RSL in Tassie? I didn't think of them at the time. Next project? I think I might be a one-hit wonder, although I did have a vague idea of doing a history of the 4th Division - that would keep me busy for quite a while, I think. I now have close contact with George Franki, who was very helpful, and also met Clyde Slatyer in Canberra, where we had a great talk (but yes it was a bit of a shock when the other book appeared). I envy your experience of the battlefields, something I haven't managed yet, but tentatively planning for next year. Can't really comment on the Chataway book, I used the one in the WA state library. It was republished in the 80s by John Burridge over here, but I don't think he'll be doing any more reprints. Graeme, "No Ordinary Determination" is available in most shops in WA ($29.95)but I'm not sure about other states. There are a number of Internet outlets selling it (incl Alexander Fax in Canberra, Hylands Melbourne and Boffins in WA), so suggest doing a google on the title and see who has the best price. regards, Jeff  nondisclosed_email@example.com (jeffhatwell)Thu, 20 Oct 2005 23:25:20 +0000 Re: 15th Battalion -https://banzacresearch.runboard.com/p1895,from=rss#post1895https://banzacresearch.runboard.com/p1895,from=rss#post1895Hello Jeff, where is your book available from? I read the Franki and Slatyer book as well - that must have made your heart sink when it came out (and Slatyer taught me History at High School)...the two books complement yourself quite well. Mind you, nothing quite matches the death of Black at Bullecourt. I've walked that battlefield 5 or 6 times, trying get it fixed in the walk from the railway line where the wire was, where the trenches were, where the tanks broke down. McSharry seemed to be as hard as nails - small, nuggety, dogged. I'll look at the pages again tonight. I've no idea how to find out who the guy in the 15th was - time in the AWM, looking at the battalion diary and doing the jigsaw puzzle of what unit was where probably isn't goig to help. And I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know there was a 15th Bn Association. Where are they? Where are they located? And where can we get the Battalion History by Chataway republished?
