3rd New Zealand Rifles
Really finding it difficult to get any info on New Zealand in the Great War!
My Gr Grandfather served with the above and although we have some details of his time on the Western Front, it's all a bit sketchy!
Also we are having trouble identifying his hat badge. Does anyone know of a good reference site or I have photos I can email if it helps?
Cheers!

Re: 3rd New Zealand Rifles
G'day Alison
The Australian War Museum has great research facilities. These are not exclusively Australian and may give some benefit.
Go to www.awm.gov.au and have a browse.
Check out "search our collections" Type in New Zealand, or one of the locations your Great Granpa served in & try your luck. The caption of each picture is cross=referenced to 'related items' which can be useful links.
You may well get more response from a UK forum. try www.1914-1918.net Have a browse, then click on Forum, register, and 'state your name & topic '

Re: 3rd New Zealand Rifles
Hi Alison
I collect WW1 NZ badges and may be able to help you. I also have a data base containing NZ WW1 Army personel which may contain your grandfather's name and enlistment details. Could you please send me a scan of the badge/s and also your grandfather's full name.
Cheers
John

Re: 3rd New Zealand Rifles
There must be something about men in the 3rd NZ Rifle Brigade when it came to photographing them with the hat badge! I've got a great uncle who I think was in the 3rd NZ Rifle Brigade... basing this on me tilting my head to the left and sticking my tongue out to the right as I peer at the photo (these actions definitely help with vision).
I've had a lot of sucess researching his brother, who was in the 3rd company of the Auckland Infantry Battalion, but that was helped along by the fact that we knew his service number from the CWGC site. Uncle Aleck, however, was lucky enough to survive the war. But never talked about it. And there are several NZ soldiers by the name of 'Alexander Mackenzie'.
*throws hands up*
So I know how you're feeling!
