The book 'Shaping History' shows a 'Short History of the 34th Batalion AIF, by Capt E Beaver and JWG Meldrum, 34 Btn Association 1957, 48 pages.
However, this entry is in the 1996 version of Shaping History so someone may have published something since. Digger Dave may respond.

Re: 34/36btns

Paul,
I take it your forbear was in the 36th Battalion and was transferred to the 34th Battalion after the 36th's disbandment in mid-1918?
Would you be able to give us his name as others may know more than I know.
I have been working on the 34th Battalion's history for the past ten or more years, but researching and writing books is a very drawn out time consuming past time, as those who are published authors will tell you.
I am aiming for something about the 34th Battalion around late April 2006, to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the Battalion's departure from Sydney for overseas service on 2 May 1916.
As for the 36th Battalion, nothing has been written to the best of my knowledge.
I have indicated elsewhere on another discussion forum site, that it is on my 'list of things to do', as are a lot of other publications and projects.
In the mean time, look in Volumes 4, 5 and 6 of Bean's 'Official History of Australia in the First World War of 1914-1918' for reference to the 36th and 34th Battalions.
Good luck with your searching.

Paul,

When in Belgium make sure you get to Toronto Ave Cemetry. Its the only cemetry on the Western Front with only Australian burials. There are 78 all up. 44 are from the 33rd ad a few are from the 36th. I couldnt find it. I had some soil from NW NSW that I wanted to spread but I just couldnt find it. ( I had a map and it was early, what can I say )

All the best.

Re: 34/36btns

I have an interest in the 36th Bn. My great grandfather and his brother were involved in Messines June 1917, and a little reported skirmish at "Hun's Walk" in July 1917, where one was killed and the other wounded.

While I have no ambition to write a battalion history, I am working on a monograph about this action in July 1917. My interests are in 1923 Pvte C W Oates and 1924 Lance Cpl R Oates, who came from Ballangarra, near Telegraph Point in NSW.
