Chris
Do you have Grieve and Newman's "Tunnellers", and Barrie's "War Underground"? If not I can look through them for you.

David H Dial may be able to help you with that, he has researched and written extensively on the miners from the Hunter Valley and their service in WWI

There is a very rare book printed by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1920.
It is called Notes on the Work of an Australian Tunnelling Company in France.

Also, there a number other titles printed on the subject of the work of the A.I.F. Engineers/Sappers in France that may assist.

Thanks for the reference, Rob.
Chris: my 2001 published book, 'Coal Miner Diggers - Hunter Valley Coal Miners at The Great War' only contains accounts of mining at Hill 60, Hill 70 and under Messine's Ridge.
I do not know if Australian Tunnelers were in the field before 1916.
If I can be of any assistance, let me know.
Best regards from diggerdave

Hi Robert,
Any trench maps would be most appreciated,
especially anything covering the area reffered to as "The Glory Hole". This is the area where i believe my great grandfather was killed.

Hi Richard,
Yes i have both those books, but thanks for your kind offer. If the subject is of interest to you, the miners
also get a mention in the "Battleground Europe" series book on La Boiselle Ovillers/Contalmaison by Michael Stedman.
This book is available at www.naval-military-press.com.

Re: Mining Companies WW1

Hi Chris

No problem. I have created an A4 size JPEG image of 'The Glory Hole', which includes La Boiselle and the associated British and German trenches. It is from the trench map 57 dSE4-2b Ovillers and is dated 11/06/1916. There are two earlier and one later map. The earlier maps are dated 07/09/1915 and 25/05/1916. Neither have the British trenches marked on them, which was not uncommon practice.

What is the best way to get it to you? Is it possible to post images somewhere on this group because I wonder if others might like to see it? Otherwise, I can email it to you.

Hi Robert,
to place images on the forum - I find they need to be uploaded to the web first/then right click the properties on photo which gives you the url which you can copy/paste above where it says insert image. Someone may know an easier way though. I am happy to do it for you if you would like just email picture to [email protected]
