6th Light Horse Photograph

Kate
The Pic in your photo archives which you have identified as a 6th Light Horse pic is not a WWI photograph. The uniform is the 1903-1912 uniform. The white pleated puggaree and the gorget patches were replaced at that time. This is the fisrt Commonwealth Pattern uniform.

Re: 6th Light Horse Photograph

Thanks Rob,
I was looking at this photo yesterday and wondering about it because it didn't look WW1 uniform. I usually put the information that the sender gives me with the photos, but sometimes it is wrong. As I don't have much knowledge about uniforms any help is greatly appreciated.
Will change it now.

Thats OK
The information on Ted Merritt has some errors in it too,,,,
also this one

NSW Trooper - Boer War
Date c.1900
Trooper wearing a tunic with stand up collar and slouch hat with emu feathers

if he has Emu Plumes he is a Queenslander, if NSW they are Black Cocks plumes. Only Queenslanders wore Emu plumes pre WWI, they were authorised for wear by other states after Federation but the option was never taken up because of protests by Qld officers (according to Chauvel)

Re: 6th Light Horse Photograph

There are a number of clues here. No colour patches would indicate pre April 1915. There is also a LH badge on the shoulder strap on the trooper on the left. The uniform on the right is a cotton tailor made unit that some troops bought in Cairo, we have one the same in the museum, and even know who owned it and who the tailor was. The Helmet with the plume is interesting, they were not issued until 1916 as far as I am aware. The Quality of the plume is very high so it is either 2nd, 5th (the QUeensland units who brought theirs from home) or the 3rd Brigade after their arrival. They also brought theirs from home.

The other title for the Militia photo sounds good,,,,, much more accurate
