John Patrick McCarthy O'Loughlin
I am trying to find information about my Grandfather - John Patrick McCarthy O'Loughlin. Born Perth W.A. Approx 1904
He apparently stowed away on a WW1 ship aged 12, and after he was discovered onboard - the men on the ship made him his own uniform, and he was made a batman?? Does anyone have any idea how I could follow this story up, and find more information.

Re: John Patrick McCarthy O'Loughlin
My understanding (somewhat limited as not ex-army) is that a batman was an officer's 'servant'. He might undertake tasks as polishing leather, packing kit, keeping billet tidy, running messages, laundering, stealing food or drink for his 'master' . . . I have read accounts where a batman has gone into action beside his officer and met the same fate. Batman were often young soldiers (perhaps even those underage ones that snuck into the AIF) tho' I have read of one of the icorrigibles from a battalion being given the job.
