5th Lt Horse Bde

A senior and retired US Army officer is writing a book on the mounted troops under Allenby.

His particulr interest at the moment is the French 1er Regiment Mixte de Cavalerie du Lavant who helped form the 5th Australian Light Horse Brigade in 1918

If anyone is able to assist let me know and I will send his email address

Ted,

I have a number of papers on the 5th LH Bde because of my interest in the Camel Corps.

But what I can see the mention of the French is only in relation to there postion during the movement of the other Regt's.

The following extracts are from the Marquess of Anglesey's book 'A history of the British Cavalry 1816-1919: Volume 5: 1914-1919 Egypt, Palestine & Syria' (ISBN 0 85052 395 8):

p 221 - 'The (5th Light Horse) brigade's third regiment was one of French cavalry known as "Regiment Mixte de Cavalerie" consisting of two Algerian Spahi squadrons and two of Chasseurs d'Afrique. It was fully equipped with automatic weapons and mounted on Moorish barbs, small in size but great stayers'.

p 263 - '(After the Battle of Sharon, 19 September, 1918) Onslow's 5th Brigade had been temporarily attached to XXI Corps for local and immediate exploitation. Mostly disregarding the Turkish infantry, which, reeling from the infantry breakthrough, was streaming across the foothills south of the town (of Irta), and keeping clear of the infantry battle, the brigade arrived soon after midday on the plain west of it. About 2,000 yds north of the town a squadron of the French Regiment Mixte galloped down and captured an Austrian battery in action. Part of the French regiment was detached to pursue a body of Turks retreating towards Shuweike. "The chase was a long one, but very successful, and the Frenchmen returned on the following morning with some hundreds of prisoners"'. The latter quote is referenced to Osborne, Lt-Col Rex, 'Operations of the Mounted Troops of the EEF' Cav. Jnl, XIII, 1923.

p 323/4 - '(on 28th September) about eleven miles short of Damascus, near Kaukab, a further apparently strong position was encountered. To attack it the whole of AusDiv (less the Gloucesters) deployed in artillery formation and trotted down a two-mile-wide valley in two wings, each regiment in column of squadrons in lines of troop columns. The spectacle was magnificent: one which had seldom been seen in modern war and one which was never to be seen again. The expected blast of machine-gun fire as the brigades charged up the opposing slope did not come. The Frenchmen of the Regiment Mixte of 5th Brigade had struck in at once past the right flank of the enemy and so menaced his rear, while the batteries freely shelled his machine-gun positions. Thus assailed, with no artillery to support them, and at the sight of the galloping horsemen, the enemy broke without firing a shot, leaving behind a dozen machine-guns and twenty-two prisoners. The Australians and French lost not a man'

p 326 - 'At El Mezze 5th Brigade, in the lead, was faced by sixteen machine guns firing from long-prepared positions. Dismounted, the brigade, led by the Regiment Mixte, could make no headway against these until at about 1pm (30th September) Notts battery came into action. The effect was almost instantaneous; the machine guns ceased firing and the crews abandoned their guns and fled.

The brigade scrambled over the hills and just before dark reached the southern heights overlooking the Barada gorge. There the French regiment with six machine guns of 2nd New Zealand Machine-Gun Squadron saw columns of thousands of troops and other fugtives with masses of transport including railway trains. Australian Hotchkiss guns and rifles joined in the work of destruction.'

Hope this is helpful.

Robert,

Can you please confirm how much Aussie & Enzed content is in 'A history of the British Cavalry 1816-1919: Volume 5: 1914-1919 Egypt, Palestine & Syria' please?

I have been thinking of buying a copy for about a year or more, but I know it is going to cost me about $100AUD.

What is your general opinion of the book?

Regards
Geoff S

Geoff

I have all of the volumes pertaining to WW1. They are superbly written, with quite a lot of detail. Very well referenced as well. The majority of Volume 5 is devoted to the Aussies & Kiwis. I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially getting caught up in the events of Megiddo. Only the cavalry/light horse actions are dealt with in detail, with sparing mention of any associated infantry involvement. Here in the UK, I paid 33 per volume approximately but it has been a worthwhile investment.

Do let me know if you have any other questions.

Regards

Robert
