Arthur Charles Conquest - DOW Germany

Some Forum members may remember awhile ago I mentioned about coming across the 91 year old twin sisters of [sign in to see URL] at work. Yesterday I interviewed Nancy, and thought I would share some of her memories with Forum.

Quote " I still remember to this day when we found out about Arth. We were all at the country church for Sunday service when Mother was summoned outside to be given the news. We had followed her out, we were so young we didn't know and wondered why she was crying.
About a month later a terrible thing happened. The newspaper reported that the news was wrong and that Arth was alive - My Father travelled to Melbourne to try and find out what had happened, and ofcourse the report was wrong - Arth was dead. My Father never bought the "bloody lying newspaper" again in his life.
Arth was very kind to us, we were so much younger than him and we were spoilt. He loved to play tennis and one day Marj and I decided to help him by cleaning his tennis shoes with black nugget.
If it was anyone alse he would have been mad as a snake about it, but because it was us he just laughed when he saw.
Awhile ago I was reading a book about WW1 but I couldn't finish it. It was too graphic , I can imagine in my mind, I don't need to read about it. People forget was it is like for family that lost people at the war, it is very hard to read about how bad it was for Arth."

I am recording soldiers from WW1 who had memorial trees planted in Violet Town. I am a member of the violet Town RSL sub-branch. The material I collect is sent to the Australian Virtual War Memorial in Adelaide to be recorded in their site for perpetuity. I stumbled on your article and am requesting permission to use the informationn in my 'story' about Arthur. I live at Upotipotpon so know the district where Arthur and his cousin Ken Cole grew up. I would appreciate any information you may give and of course will send you the article before submitting it the AVWM.
