19th Battalion AIF, killed in action....Please help?

I feel like I am a real beginner here, not having done any Australian research in the past:

I have just picked up a lovely British War and Victory Medal to an Australian who was killed near Amiens in August 1918 serving with the 19th Battalion: Pte. Alfred Lynch Killed August 11, 1918.

To start I know little about the structure of the Australian Expeditionary Force in France. How many divisions were there? Is there somewhere on the internet that can give me more info on the 19th Battalion? For starters who were they?

For example, the 19th Canadian Battalion was a Central Ontario Regiment, raised primarily in Toronto and surrounding areas. Would this have been true for the 19th Australian Battalion to a district or province in Australia?

Lastly any helpful advice on what resources and areas I should be looking at for further research into this soldier would be most helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Hi ya,

Welcome to Australian research - where we are truly blessed with the amount of records that are freely available on the internet!

The 19th Battalion was formed in the Aussie State of New South Wales. It was one of 4 Infantry Battalions (17,18,19,20 - all NSW) which made up the 5th Brigade. The 5th Bde in turn was one of 3 Brigades that belonged to the 2nd Division. There were 5 Divisions in the AIF in WW1.

You can find a lot more detail on the structure of the AIF & the 19th Bn on the Australian War Memorial website (www.awm.gov.au) & the Digger History website (www.diggerhistory.info).

Pte Alfred Lynch, No. 5595, 19th Bn, who was born in Liverpool, NSW & enlisted in Sydney, NSW on the 6/3/1916 also has his War Service Record digitised on the National Archives of Australia website (naa12.naa.gov.au) - so you can view the whole thing on line (for free).

As far as I know, there hasn't been a Unit History written for the 19th - but if you're lucky - somebody might read this who's done some research on them. Unfortunately all the units I've researched are Victorian. But the above should get you started.

Good luck and cheers, Frev
