The medallion has Uncle Jock's service number as well as J. Mackenzie, which I'm very happy about. I was under the impression that there would be no room, and that they generally just have the first initial and surname only. However, there was no certificate with it other than a bit of paper saying 'With the compliments of the New Zealand Defence Force' and the name of the assistant I was dealing with in the office. I'd been led to believe there would be a certificate. Ah well. It is in a nice box, though, with 'Gallipoli 1915' in gold-coloured print on the top. Allie the twitnondisclosed_email@example.com (alliekiwi)Wed, 24 May 2006 16:52:20 +0000 Anzac Commemorative Medallionhttps://banzacresearch.runboard.com/p3385,from=rss#post3385https://banzacresearch.runboard.com/p3385,from=rss#post3385I recently discovered the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, and vaguely decided to look up great great Uncle Jock on it, as he died in France in 1917. His framed photo had sat beside my grandmother's bed for as long as I can remember. Imagine my surprise when his listing said 'also served at Gallipoli' - this snippet of information had never been passed along, which seems very odd considering how much attention we New Zealanders and Australians tend to focus on the Gallipoli campaign, and the Anzacs in particular. After asking around, it seems no-one in the remaining family knew about this Gallipoli connexion. I looked online to find out how to obtain his service record, and found that, as of April 2005, the New Zealand Defence Force at Trentham has been sending all pre-1920 records to the permanent care of the National Archives of New Zealand. (If someone in charge of this website happens to read this post, you might like to update where to write for these.) You now need to write to: Archives New Zealand P.O. Box 12 050 Wellington New Zealand Alternatively, you may be able to make your request online here. I managed to get mine through an online request, and recieved the service record in just over two weeks via post. Trying to get the Anzac Commemorative Medallion is more tricky. It seems the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Upon receipt of the service record, I saw that it had stamped across it 'Medal Action Complete’, dated 25 January 1924. (These medals have gone missing, probaby when my great grandfather's second wife emptied the house of virtually all posessions and skived off whilst he was away one weekend, back in the 1940s). There is no mention of the Anzac Commemorative Medallion. Following the instructions on this site, I wrote away to the Medals Office of the New Zealand Defence Force at Trentham, asking if they knew if the medallion had been claimed, and, if not, how I could possibly go about claiming it. The New Zealand Defence Force wrote back and told me to contact Archives New Zealand. Upon contacting Archives New Zealand again, I was told that, although they now hold the service records in their archives, they do not have anything to do with outsanding medals or commemorative awards, and that I should contact the medal office of the NZ Defence Force! I am now writing to the New Zealand Defence Force once more, pointing out that the medallion did not become available until 1967, and where - if not to them or Archive New Zealand - I should write to attempt claiming the medallion. Any tips would be appreciated! Allie  nondisclosed_email@example.com (allie kiwi)Wed, 24 May 2006 16:12:26 +0000
