Battlefield & Battalion Photo ID

I have recently been given these photos to put on website
and was wondering if anyone may be able to help a couple of questions about them

1/ The first picture of Frederick Taylor - shows 4 stripes on his bottom right sleeve. As I understand these are service stripes - but the photo is supposedly taken in August 1915? I think I can make out a wound stripe on left sleeve also...so maybe date is wrong
2/Large battalion photo taken in France 1918 - Could possibly be 23rd Btn - but if anyone thinks they could help with ID I can enlarge some more.
3/ Aerial shot of battlefield - does anyone have any knowledge of these maps. The numbers on this photo are X.69.B.33
28.U.21.27AB
4.1.18
The photos can be found here

Thanks Kate

Your photo shows it was taken in 1918 not 1915.

The other two are unknown to me.

Thanks Steve,
After I posted this query the man who sent me the photos ammended the details from 1915 - to 1918 - I forgot to add it here- so problem with that photo solved. A friend sent this reply about the map photo

Regarding the battle field aerial photo I have a strong feeling that it was taken in Belgium Flanders.. likely in the area of Messines & Warneton.

Kate

I can help you with the map. It was a little tricky. The first point is that it appeared to be a wood. The dark interior with straight but irregular shaped edges is typical. I took a punt with Ploegsteert Wood. By making a copy from an original trench map (28 SW4-5b) and then making the copy partially transparent, then rotating it on the photograph, I was able to get the two to line up perfectly.

The photograph is rotated circa 110 degrees clockwise. Thus, north is roughly on the right hand side. The oval feature top-left is Essex Farm. Nearby is Subsidiary Trench. The rectangular feature mid-bottom right is Moated Farm. Just to the left of Moated Farm is a small dark splodge - this is Dead Horse Corner.

Messines is 2.5km north of Moated Farm.

The markings on the photograph did not help with the identification. I suspect they are photograph ID numbers. They are similar to the codes used in Watkis' book 'The Western Front from the air' (ISBN 0 7509 1338 X) and bear no resemblance that I can determine with the associated maps.

Hope this helps

Robert
