Trying to trace Great grandfather with only a surname....

My grandfather did not know who his father was and was raised by his [sign in to see URL] was called Arthur Anzac Samwells, Samwells was not his mothers name and we think Anzac is a clue to his heritage.
There were rumours around town that his father could Have been an Australian soldier who didn't return after leaving harwich in Essex uk during ww1.
I just received his birth certificate and there is a blank in the fathers name but has been given the name samwells.
My grandfather was born 29th February 1916........
Can anyone help me piece this all together, if I could find out if any samwells fought in the Anzac corps would be a start.
Thanks
