I will post a short summary on this forum later this week on what we have so far. I want to ensure I have got my head around all details. The variation must have to do with the criteria we are using to verify the count.

If there were about 650 horses killed weekly and between 2000 and 3000 horses destroyed at the end of the war and the hides were salted with 7 pounds of salt and sold to local contractors.
I find it unlikely that no hides or leather products ended up coming back to Australia. Because I have a leather coat dated 1915-1925 which I was told it was horse hide, and it has Australian MAKE (strange) and bad interpretation of a Kangaroo on press studs, wondering weather anyone can shed light on this.
